Anchorages
Port Control will, on request, advise vessels on the most suitable anchorages.
These anchorages may be found around two miles off the coast or nearby Lunan Bay.

Berthing
Berthing is available either (a) on the North Quays which are 558 metres in length with a minimum dredged level at MLWS of 5.5 metres to chart datum or (b) on the South Quays which are 245 metres long with a minimum dredged level of 5.5 metres above chart datum.
The range of tide is 2.5 metres to chart datum at neaps, 5 metres at springs.
Chart datum is 2.65 metres below ordinary datum Newlyn (0.7 metres above MLWS at Montrose). Sheltered berthing is available and vessels lying alongside in any weather conditions experience no heave or range.

Cargo Handling
A wide range or cargoes pass though the port. Montrose stevedores are experienced in handling for import or export all forest products, all bulk, semi bulk, break bulk cargoes and containers including pulp, timber, grain, scrap, feedstuffs, fertilisers, potatoes, offshore oil materials etc. Equipment to handle all of these cargoes are available on site.

Maximum Size of Vessels
Vessels up to 164 metres long and with a maximum draft of up to 7.5 metres are accepted. Larger vessels may be accommodated depending on type.

Navigation Channel
The entrance channel is dredged annually to a minimum depth of 5.5 metres MLWS and a minimum width of 50 metres.
The channel is marked by leading lights. The outer leading light is red and the inner leading light is green.

Open Storage
The port has approximately up to 30 acres available of open ground which can be used for either general storage or fabrication work. Much of this area is made up of fenced compounds.

Port Control/Pilotage
All shipping movements in and around Montrose Port are controlled and monitored from Port Control situated in the Port Offices on the South Quay.
Port Control is manned 24hrs a day with VHF watch maintained on Channel 12.
Vessels arriving should call 'Montrose Port Authority' on Channel 16 at least two hours prior to their arrival.
The 24 hour pilotage service is maintained at the port and is compulsory for the movement of all vessels (except fishing vessels) using the port. Incoming vessels are normally boarded by the Pilots at the boarding area approximately at one and a half miles ENE of Scurdy Ness Lighthouse.
Vessels bound for Montrose to keep Port Control advised on any alteration to ETAs at least six hours prior to arrival.
Vessels are advised to remain east of the outer red buoy at port entrance and await further instructions from the pilot and Port Control who will advise on berthing and anchorage as required.

Plant
An extensive range of plant is maintained at the port capable of handling all types or cargoes. In addition to craneage, there are forklifts with specialised attachments for specific cargoes - including clamps for handling paper and pulp.
Among other plant on site are 'Bobcats' with bucket attachments for bulk discharge and container-handling equipment.

Quays
The port has around 1,000 metres of quayside on the North and South Quays.

Security
24 hour CCTV security cover is operated by the Port Authority. Both the North and South Quays are completely fenced around their boundaries.

Sheds/Warehousing
Up to 425,000 square feet of warehousing is available throughout the port for storage or as transit sheds. 275,000 square feet of storage is located on the North Quay and 150,00 square feet on the South Quay. All warehousing is well lit with heating available in some areas.

Stevedoring
Stevedoring in the port is provided by Piggins & Rix Ltd and W Whyte Port Handlers Ltd. Efficiency, flexibility and inexpensive overtime are the hallmarks of the stevedores in the port, enabling vessels to turn round quicker and minimise costs.

Workshops
There are three workshops on the South Quay with a total area of 32,000 square feet. One of the workshops has overhead cranes and all have offices and are fully heated.
